One to One Midwives

Baby bump and dandelion clock photo copyright Amberlight ImagesWhat if you could choose to have just one midwife to support you through your pregnancy journey? Would you?
You’d see the same person at every ante-natal appointment with the option to have those appointments scheduled during the evening or weekends; choose for them to be at a dedicated pregnancy advice centre or even in the comfort of your own home rather than the GP’s surgery or a clinic?
Sounds idyllic doesn’t it? And expensive?
This was our expectation when we met with Laura and Melanie from One to One recently! But as it turns out, this is just a part of the service One to One midwives offer…and it’s free!

This is because it’s actually commissioned by our local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) as part of improvements to the choice of care available for mums–to–be during pregnancy. For those worried about the cost of this service to our much loved but generally cash strapped NHS, it costs the same per patient for One to One Midwives to care for you during your pregnancy and birth as it does through your GP and local NHS Trust maternity service.

One to One midwives support is now available across many areas of the North West including Wirral, West Cheshire, South Cheshire, Vale Royal, Warrington and Liverpool. You can choose to be in their care from the minute you find out you are expecting, right through your pregnancy, and they will still be there supporting you and your baby for 6 weeks following the birth.Pregnancy bump photo Amberlight Images WirralAnd whilst One to One have a higher rate of home births than the standard NHS ante-natal care, if you would still prefer a hospital birth then your One to One midwife will be there supporting you during early labour at home, right up to the time you need to go to hospital, and will be back supporting you and your new baby as soon as you are both home.Baby supported in mum's hands black & white photo copyright Amberlight Images

If only this service had been available when I was expecting! I would have loved to see the same midwife at each appointment, to build up a friendship and trust. And when I needed to call for advice, I would have known exactly who I was speaking to!
